Preparing students for the future

Stem Logo

Thanks to a generous grant from Northrop Grumman Corporation, 120 Slauson Middle School students have been selected to participate in the Viva Technology STEM conference(date pending). Viva Technology™ is a national STEM-awareness education program that engages students, teachers, and parents through culturally relevant, active, hands-on activities intended to stimulate interest in STEM careers. Students experience a day filled with competitive and educational activities.

They work in teams led by college students (College Captains) from surrounding universities majoring in a STEM field. Students hear a presentation from professionals affiliated with sponsoring or supporting organizations. Active participation gives the students opportunities to accrue Viva DollarsTM that serve as raffle tickets to earn them the chance to win educational prizes at the end of the day.

In addition, parents are invited to an orientation designed to explain to parents what their children will learn from being involved in the program; how encouraging interest in math and science will positively impact their child’s future; and what career opportunities lay ahead for their young scholar. Presentation and materials can be provided in both English and Spanish.
